Hualai wire gauze structured packing is the preferred packing in distillation service for deep vacuum and low liquid rate applications. The characteristic of lowest pressure drop per theoretical stage makes wire gauze packing the preferred device for processing specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals and temperature-sensitive materials.
Wire gauze packing is generally used in small to medium diameter columns to achieve the maximum number of theoretical stages in the minimum column height. Because of the capillary effect, the wire mesh material provides an extremely wettable surface resulting in excellent mass transfer efficiency particularly at very low liquid rates.
Materials of Construction
The most common material used for Hualai structured column packing is SS 304L and SS 316L. However Hualai manufactures this solely based on our customers’ requirements and can also be made from other materials based on special requests. Other materials like Titanium, duplex 2205, copper, etc. are also no problem with us.
Uniform Liquid Distribution
In order to achieve even liquid distribution over the packing it is a must to have a good liquid distributor to maximize the interaction of the liquid and vapor. However if the packing height exceeds 3 meters we recommend using an intermediate liquid re-distributor as well for even flow.

Projects applying wire mesh structured packing
- Triformaldehyde was refined and separated by 500X corrugated wire mesh packing tower. The purity of the product is more than 99.9% and the impurity content is less than 300 ppm.
- 500 type wire mesh structured packing used in Phenol distillation column, instead of part of Cascade Mini Ring.
- Vacuum distillation unit for dimethyl terephthalate, with 500 wire gauze packing.
- Pentaerythritol production device, 500 type wire mesh structured packing tower.
- Nitrotoluene isomers are separated by vacuum distillation with 700Y corrugated wire mesh packing.
